The story of The Cathedral League’s founding and 31 years of faithful service to the Patriarch Bolaji Methodist Church.
A Short History of The Cathedral League
The Cathedral League stands as a testament to divine inspiration and collective vision. Rooted in the Patriarch Bolaji Methodist Church, Ikorodu, Lagos, Nigeria, this unique society of Christian professionals has dedicated itself to the physical, material, and spiritual upliftment of the church since its inception.
Inception and Founding Vision
Through divine inspiration, two devoted members—Bro. K. O. Olomo, and Bro. (Chief) ‘Kayode Shoderu— and then Bro. S. ‘Geshin Morafa on the recommendation of Bro. K.O Olomo, nurtured a dream to establish a new society within the church.
Collaborating closely, they identified like-minded individuals, culminating in the first assembly of ten pioneering members:
1. Bro. K. O. Olomo
2. Bro. (Chief) ‘Kayode Shoderu
3. Bro. S. ‘Geshin Morafa
4. Bro. ‘Shina Soyebo
5. Bro. (Chief) Dele Kuti
6. Bro. Ladimeji Oshinowo
7. Bro. Ladi Sowemimo
8. Bro. Taiwo Kara
9. Bro. David Sunmoni
10. Bro. (Dr.) Ayo Ajayi
Birth of the League
The inaugural meeting on 19th March 1995 marked the beginning of this divine endeavor. By early April 1995, critical decisions were solidified, including the adoption of the name THE CATHEDRAL LEAGUE, formally communicated to the Church Leadership via letter on 5th April 1995.
The League’s official “birth” was recognized on 23rd April 1995, symbolizing its commitment to the Cathedral’s development and spiritual legacy.
Leadership and Mission
Guided by its core objective—the development, upliftment, and projection of the Cathedral —the League’s inaugural leadership comprised:
- President: Bro. (Chief) ‘Kayode Shoderu
- Secretary: Bro. ‘Shina Soyebo
- Treasurer: Bro. K. O. Olomo
The League’s own account, written in 2025, records Secretary as Bro. Ladi Sowemimo and Treasurer as Bro. ‘Shina Soyebo. This page follows the printed programme for 15 October 1995, which is the contemporary record. The difference is noted here rather than settled quietly, and the programme is reproduced in full in the archive.
Distinguished Patronage
The League’s impact was further elevated by its esteemed patrons:
- Grand Patron: Rt. Rev. S. Olu Alaran (Bishop of Ikorodu Diocese)
- First Patron: Chief B. O. Benson, SAN (Lay President of Conference)
- Patron: Chief O. I. Alokolaro (Lay President of Ikorodu Diocese)

Early Years and First Projects (1995-2000)
The first five years of The Cathedral League were marked by ambitious projects that set the tone for the organization’s impact. Within months of its founding, the League undertook its first major project: providing marble cladding for the entire chancel of the Cathedral, significantly enhancing the beauty and reverence of the worship space.
In 1997, the League constructed a vestry in the basement of the female Priests’ quarters, providing essential space for clergy preparation before services. This practical addition demonstrated the League’s commitment to improving both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the Cathedral.
The culmination of the League’s early work came in 2000 with the acquisition of a magnificent Grand Opera Pipe Organ and the construction of a befitting cubicle to house it. This significant investment in the Cathedral’s musical worship capabilities transformed the congregation’s experience and established the League as a serious force for positive change.
The League today
31 years on from its inauguration, The Cathedral League stands as a testament to the power of dedicated service and collective effort. Under the current leadership, the League continues to identify and address the evolving needs of the Cathedral.
Through 31 years of faithful service, The Cathedral League has demonstrated that when believers unite in purpose and commitment, they can achieve remarkable things for God’s house and His people. As it looks to the future, the League remains steadfast in its founding vision: to enhance the spiritual, physical and material development of the Patriarch Bolaji Methodist Cathedral for generations to come.
